FAQs

What should I wear to class?
When coming to a first class with us, it is important to be comfortable and wear non-restrictive clothing, such as shorts and t-shirt. Please remove all jewellery and keep long hair tied back. Karate is always practiced barefoot.
When you are ready to join our Academy, we provide you with full karate gi, belt and other training kit as part of your Welcome Goody Bag.

Do I have to be fit or athletic to start karate?
Everything we do in karate can be tweaked to suit our own fitness and abilities. You definitely don’t have to be fit to begin training in karate. Although, you will find your fitness quickly develops once you start!
-
Do you train full contact?
No, we do not train full contact in karate. Any contact we use is trained with accuracy, control and consideration for our partners. We introduce this competition-style semi-contact in children from age 14, and only if comfortable for them to do so.
-
I am 57, am I too old to start karate?
Absolutely not! The teachings and application of karate are suitable for all ages with any ability. There are karateka (karate students) well into their 100's and still going strong!
Shobu Kai teach students from age 4 and have no upper age limit.
-
How long does it take to get a Black Belt?
The beauty of practicing karate is that EVERYONE, yes everyone, can achieve black belt (Sho Dan). From joining to first black belt, it can take as little as 3 years. However, at Shobu Kai, the emphasis is on your learning journey, not the colour of belt around your waist.
-
I used to train or I trained with another karate school, can I join?
We’d love to have you! There’s no better feeling than reigniting your passion for karate after a break or change in training. A number of our students have joined us after years out of training.
When you enrol, we will chat with you about your previous training and the steps required to reaffirm your grade. You’ll be amazed at how quickly things come back to you.

How do I enrol?
Email us using the contact form or directly on “admin@shobukaikarateacademy.co.uk”. One of our team will be happy to help set up your new student membership!

Do you offer workshops or programs?
We are excited to say we have a number of karate-based workshops and programs for use with schools and other local organisations. Please get in touch for more information!
