More Than Karate.
Build Confidence, Discipline & Leadership For Life.

Through structured coaching, progression, and personal development, we help children, teenagers, and adults in Bearsden build confidence, resilience, focus, and self-belief — on and off the mats.

Shobu Kai Karate Academy is a modern martial arts academy based in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, offering structured karate coaching for children, teenagers, and adults from our full-time professional dojo.

Our mission goes far beyond teaching punches, kicks, and belts. We use karate as a vehicle to help people develop confidence, discipline, resilience, focus, leadership, and self-belief — skills that positively impact every area of life.

Through expert coaching, clear progression pathways, and a culture built on growth and respect, our students are challenged to become stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Whether someone walks through our doors lacking confidence, searching for direction, wanting to improve performance, or simply looking to become the strongest version of themselves, our academy exists to guide that journey.

We specialise in Traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate, while also embracing the modern evolution of high-level sport karate and athlete development. This unique blend allows our students to experience both the depth and philosophy of authentic martial arts training, alongside the structure, athleticism, and performance standards of contemporary competition coaching.

As a proud affiliate of JKS Scotland, our teaching remains deeply connected to authentic Japanese karate principles and technical standards. Every class is delivered with professionalism, purpose, and a genuine passion for helping students grow both on and off the mats.

Unlike many martial arts schools that focus only on attendance and grading, we believe in creating real development through structured coaching systems, performance reviews, goal setting, and long-term progression.

Our students are supported at every stage of their journey — from complete beginners taking their very first class, to athletes preparing for national and international competition.

Our purpose-built dojo operates 6 days per week, 46 weeks per year, with classes available for a wide range of ages, experience levels, and goals.

Whether your aim is confidence, fitness, discipline, self-defence, competition, personal growth, or simply becoming part of a strong and supportive community, there is a pathway designed for you.

At Shobu Kai Karate Academy, karate is not simply something we teach.

It is a framework for personal growth, transformation, and high performance.

Book your first class and experience the academy for yourself.

Is One Karate Class a Week Enough?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from parents:

“Is one karate class per week enough?”
